Why Mobile CLI is Not Recommended for enterprise calling?

Phonon uses telecom landlines for enterprise grade calls. Our enterprise customers often demand a 10-digit phone number for their outbound calling processes. This calling is done through GSM SIM banks or through Mobile SIPs, as claimed by some vendros. This paper details why Phonon does not recommend usage of Mobile CLI banks for enterprise grade solutions; and suggestions to improve connectivity through OTT solutions.

What are GSM SIM Banks?

GSM SIM Box

A SIM box (also called a SIM bank) is device used as part of a VoIP gateway installation. It contains a number of SIM cards, which are linked to the gateway but housed and stored separately from it. A SIM box can have SIM cards of different mobile operators installed, permitting it to operate with several GSM gateways located in different places.

Why our enterprise customers request Mobile CLI?

Enterprises like the idea that calls can go from mobile numbers, which claim to have a higher pick-up rate, numbers can be randomised and therefore can be swapped with another SIM if the number is marked as SPAM .

Should you use a GSM SIM Bank?

Short answer: No . Why?

Here’s what Wikipedia Link on SIM Box says: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_box

SIM boxes are often used for fraudulent and/or illegal purposes, including avoidance of tolls in violation of carriers' acceptable use policies and the sending of mobile text messaging spam.

Many carriers attempt to detect and deny service to SIM boxes through various means, including cancellation or restriction of service to identified SIMs.

SIM Banks often falsify the IMEI by using randomised IMEIs in ranges of or those assigned to common mobile phones to evade detection.

Not only that government and carriers do not like SIM Boxes, they are also not a really good choice in terms of long term benefits. Some reasons are:

  1. SIM Boxes are limited to 16 or 32 SIMs, and hence calling capacity is greatly limited as you only have 16 or 32 channels (that is, concurrent calling capacity).

  2. Numbers can get easily blocked or have spam marking on OTT apps such as Truecaller.

  3. Acquiring SIM numbers, replacing them and managing them are an unnecessary headache and maintenance.

  4. The hangup codes - which are sent by carrier to notify about the end party - are more inaccurate in GSMs than using SIP trunks. These are important for call data analytics.

  5. GSM uses FTDMA access scheme. Here multiple users share same bandwidth and hence will lead to interference when more number of users are using the GSM service. Hence, there is a much greater chance of getting congestions or network slowness.

Due to the above, we strongly not recommend using GSM SIM Banks.

Is Mobile CLI through SIP Trunks Possible?

Landline SIP Trunking, a reasonable enterprise grade solution

Instead of going through the route of procuring SIMs and hardware, instead go for the industry standard - SIP Trunking from a preferred telecom operator providing enterprise grade SIP trunks such as Tata, Airtel or Vodafone terminated at a Cloud Telephony Provider such as https://phonon.io.

  1. You can easily get as many CLI (Caller Line Identifier) Numbers as needed, if you wish to rotate your numbers.

  2. SIP trunk channels focus on CPS (calls per second) as a parameter for calling. Calling, call connectivity are provided through enterprise level support from telecom operator.

  3. The Service Level of a SIP trunk is assured by a telecom operator, versus a GSM SIM being a consumer focused product. The connectivity, uptime, and reliability is far better on SIP Trunk than on consumer marketed products.

But I really want a mobile-like number!

Okay, maybe you can get your own SIP Trunk at Bangalore location. Bangalore’s std code is 080, and hence the CLIs will be numbered +91 80688 80688, which looks like a mobile number. Phonon has a dedicated point-of-presence in Bangalore where you can terminate your SIP trunks.

Not only can you get a Mobile-like CLI number, you can also enhance your brand presence, identity and improve you call connect rates much farther by using the Brand Identity Solutions provided by Phonon.
